Environmental contemporary : Statement of Influences
In Australia we have a deep symbolic bond with the bush (any native vegetation from forest to semi desert is bush). We are locked into an eternal struggle of such enormous proportions with our environment, that at times it leaves us with feeling of wonderment and at other times it leaves us with feeling of times dread. We are bound together in our love of this unforgiving land with its beauty of wildflowers after rain and the terrible dread of wildfires (known to us as bushfires) bring much death and destruction, usually after long crippling droughts. So we dance this dance together, locked in this embrace, the land and us. We are bound into this through our folklore and our needs for each other, the land of extremes we love so much with her fires, floods and devastating droughts. Yet it is a land of rugged and cruel beauty to which we do fall under her spell and are drawn into her bosom.
I am an environmental contemporary, I feel a strong and profound spiritual connection the environment. I have always been influenced by the rhymes of nature and the universe. Out of this I was influenced Van Gogh, with his use of raw colour which he used to create perspective. Later I was influenced by Piet Mondrian with his use of pure colour, the use of positive and negative space in a very controlled disciplined manner. I was impressed by his balance and harmony, with his simple use pure to colour and basic shapes. Klaus Moje also was an influence in more resent times. Good is a window to the soul of the artist a reflection the true inner. It should reflect, or be a reflection of community standards. For the observer good art should touch the soul and reflection of ones values.
